Cross-Country Skiing

The beauty of winter activities is that they can be enjoyed in solitude, by groups or families...and cross-country skiing is no exception. With an abundance of cross-country ski trails throughout Rainbow Country, you can thoroughly enjoy the best Mother Nature has to offer.

Bright blue skies provide the perfect backdrop for the majestic evergreens against the winter world of white, where you can easily see trails made by rabbits, partridge, fox, and deer to name a few!

Even if you've never skied before, it's easy to rent the equipment to try out this favourite wintertime sport.

Many lodges and resorts groom their own trails for your cross-country skiing pleasure.

Ice-Fishing

Ice fishing in Rainbow country is a super way for the whole family to enjoy the great outdoors...or the perfect reason for a few of the guys and gals to get together.

Imagine setting yourself down is a comfortable, stove heated hut, all the while waiting for a whitefish, perch or pike to take the bait you've generously offered. Within Rainbow Country you'll find many 'hot' spots including the Parry Sound area, Manitoulin Island, and the Sudbury Region itself.

Wherever you decide to auger your hole, keep in mind that the usual fishing regulations apply when angling through ice.

All Ontario residents require an Ontario Sport Fishing License when angling unless he or she is a person under 18 years of age or 65 years of age or older. Fishing licenses are available at bait, tackle and sport shops, many tourist outfitters or contact the Ministry of Natural Resources, Box 3500, Station "A", Sudbury, Ontario P3A 4S2.

Snowshoeing

It's hard to imagine what life would have been like in the early days of Canada's history without the benefit of snowshoes. Used by natives, trappers and voyageurs, these special wood and leather racks worn on the feet keep the wearer from sinking in deep snow, and were essential for winter travel. In days gone by, most Northerners needed snowshoes when ice fishing, trapping or hunting winter game.

Today of course many people are taking up snowshoeing as a form of winter exercise and a sport in it's own right.

Whether following wooded trails, crossing lakes, or creating your own path, snowshoeing, like cross country skiing, allows you to observe the bountiful northern wildlife while getting some exercise!

There are plenty of non-migratory birds to see, including the beautiful Blue Jay and it's cousin the Canada Jay, as well as other game...ideal to photograph or simply watch while out on a snowshoe hike.

Keep in mind that there are many Provincial Parks located throughout Rainbow Country, and while closed for the season, they still offer you an ungroomed wilderness setting to enjoy the area wildlife while on an outing.

Skating

If you've ever watched the ice skating competitions on television, you'll know that it is and elegant and beautiful sport. Most people however don't have the skill it takes to be an Olympic medalist, but here in Rainbow Country you'll find just about everyone has a pair of skates!

All over the north there are arenas which are open for 'public skating' and you'll find many outdoor rinks too!

Nothing beats gliding over a smooth surface, be it a pond, a lake, or outdoor track turned rink, bundled up against the chill and enjoying a beautiful day or star-filled night.

You'll find an abundance of community arenas in Rainbow Country, just about every city, town, village has one. Simply call for public skating times.
